It’s refreshing to see a truly South African outfit – MLT (Multilayer Trade Corp) – who are dedicated to servicing the courtesy car market and found in just about every corner of South Africa – whether they be public, tourism, private, maritime – and specifically those located even closer to our hearts right here at Automotive Refinisher: the autobody repair and allied mechanical workshop sectors that are found in just about every dorp/town/city right across the Republic of South Africa… and even across our borders on occasion.

MLT runs on sound business principles and is driven by its founder Janet Pillai, whom we caught up with at their head office in the Waterfront region of Cape Town. “Our vehicle rental department is operational 365 days of the year – 24 hours of the day – if need be,” reckons Pillai, who, along with her very capable staff, including amiable Shannon Govender, key accounts manager who recognises that no one ever wants to be without his (or her) wheels for any length of time while their vehicle is in the panelbeating shop awaiting repairs.

This may well only be for a day or two – but it could be for a whole lot longer on occasion. “MLT goes the extra mile to ensure our courtesy cars are available for all your travel arrangements, ie: getting the kids to school and safely home again; collecting hubby from work, for example,” believes Govender.

Obviously, not every insurance company allows for the provision of a rental car – and this is where MLT comes to the rescue while your own vehicle is being repaired – so it stands to reason will allow you more time to inspect any repairs done before taking back your own car.

To be fair to your chosen panelbeating shop there may well be unexpected delays due to late delivery/problems sourcing OEM parts; while there often has to be all important mutual agreements between, say, repairer/broker/insurer/customer allowing time to get their “ducks in a row” before any vehicle can be deemed ready for collection …

It’s good to see that MLT cars (and they have quite a variety to choose from) include 150 kilometres free per day, while all vehicles are comprehensively covered against third party damage, loss of keys, emergency and medical along with roadside assistance in the event of a breakdown, and last but not least: no credit facility needed*. There’s even a drop- and collect service – all you need to show is a valid driver’s licence!
