No one can argue too much with the fact that the all-new 3008 got the nod as the best European Car of the Year 2017. Peugeot 3008 is the first SUV winner since the inception of the trophy in 1964 and along with this latest accolade to the other 20 prizes that it has scooped up.

The avante garde mix of materials and design sort of shows you a vision of a motor show concept car release for it’s distinctive design shouts out loud, “Excuse me” in French. With a full complement of driver assistance systems, the whole model range is packed full of intelligent automatic braking (AEBS), as well as distance alert packages that work together for maximum driver and occupant safety. By keeping a safe distance from another vehicle if it turns in front of you, state-of-the-art gismology extends to lane departure warning coupled to a full line up of six airbags.

In the value for money stakes, the 3008 GI is a front runner for it is hard to think what more the driver or owner of this SUV could ever want more of. Electric driver seat, a panoramic roof, which is retractable, steering wheel gear change paddles are there for a bit of manual override if you desire, bluetooth and a premium sound hi-fi six speaker system are all controlled from the mid-mounted control screen along with dual ‘his and hers’ climate control. The driver engagement is just the perfect place to be – behind the comfortable  inch capacitive touchscreen controller which includes a Satnav. Easy to use, even for the elderly statesman like myself.

Overall the SUV is hard to fault. It’s got punchy performance, good economy and thankfully a set of high riding tyres coupled to attractive mag wheels which avoid road damage because of our poor state of rural roads. That’s an increasingly important necessity – unless you like fumbling around in the darkest Free State night looking to change the tyre.

The 3008 will no doubt move forwards to reposition the Peugeot brand to its former glory days. All this for half a bar is a real snip for this high-rise design makes it such a different car design within this segment. It is both elegant and desirable with a modern  petrol engine.

Overall, the 3008 GT has an air of style and technological sophistication about it, coupled to a faultless torque converter automatic gearbox. The whole vehicle simply eats up the roads kilometre after kilometre in premium style. It is spacious and the 121kW motor on hand with overtaking ability enhances driver appeal. A customised dial selection delivers the exact information you may need at any time.

Seated in your new quilted passenger seat it delivers a memorable and very nice drive under all road going conditions. Wafting along with its six-speed auto gearbox means you always exit this king-of-the-hill car design in great style, for it sets an all-new standard in this burgeoning segment.
