The all new state-of-the-art Gordon Cumming body repairs shop comes from a long line of collision repair history of three generations manning the company. The original downtown body shop was founded by Gordon Cumming in 1950, and claims to be one of East London’s oldest family business operations in collision repair.

Robin Cumming entered the business with his father in 1980 and purchased one of the town’s first spray booths in a pioneering move. His son, Bruce Cumming, has now gone one better with the new Beacon Bay operation and had this to say about the new shop; “Service, quality and integrity form the foundation on which we have built our brand. Without these elements the rest is just bricks and mortar.”

With a ground up design the new shop is as modern as can be featuring the very latest repair technology for faster cycle time. The new workshop is a modern marvel with two new Saima spray booths – a sprinter type booth with extra height built in as well as a normal 7.5 waterborne refinish type. The package was installed by Heinz Brügger from the Marouns Group and their paint brand of choice is sourced from Spies Hecker. Ever since they started way back when, they have been constant users of the prestige German refinish brand. A special colour mixing room completes the high yield equipment production package with colour matching special capabilities installed.

The preparation section employs a full underground extraction bay designed by Pyrmo, along with no trailing air lines and a large 7000 Hamach dust free vacuum system. Workers now enjoy absolutely perfect conditions every day.

The body shop section also employs the very latest Spanesi jig bench and Electronic Touch measuring multi-directional repair bench which has a huge repair capacity. “Because we spend most of our life at work, it was important to us that we created an environment where our staff are proud and happy,” said Bruce.

Today Hollard, Santam, Old Mutual and ABSA form their main support for insurance repairs. Bruce said at the launch of the new shop: “We have enjoyed the process of building solid relationships with our insurance partners where we strive to look after the best interests of the insurer, the clients and by osmosis, our own.”

The opening was well supported by all who have had a hand in contributing to the phenomenal growth the company has achieved over the last seven years. A fine time was had by all into the late evening. The new facility dazzled all in attendance where Isuzu presented Bruce and Julia with their fully approved body repair progamme. Graeme Gill, business development manager at Isuzu, says that the family can be very proud of what they have achieved with the launch of the amazing new shop in Beacon Bay.

One thing is for sure, the Cumming family are now operating one of the most modern production facilities in South Africa – one that any collision repair company would be extremely proud of. It’s a sort of crowning glory of 65 years of hard endeavours in the body shop business and one that will carry them forward into the future.
