It’s hard not to see if you’re in a modern body shop, that most cars undergoing crash repair damage seem to become ever more technical and electronically advanced by the model. Facelifting upgrades compound the problem too. Simply keeping abreast of these constant changes increases litigation possibilities for claims of diminished value on a car repair for a perceived poor repair.

“The idea to empower South African repairers in collision repair is now long overdue,” says Steve Kessel from the Collision Repair Association (CRA). “With our innovative OEM approval methods for repair now in place, a body shop has access to a repair database of in excess of 500 model types and these are able to develop 400 000 documents for accurate repair.

“The list of motor makers encompass: Alfa Romeo, Audi, Bentley, BMW, Chevrolet, Chrysler/Dodge, Citroën, Ferrari, Fiat, Ford, Honda, Hyundai, Jaguar, Jeep, Kia, Lexus, Land Rover, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Mini, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Opel, Peugeot, Porsche, Renault, SAAB, Séat, Skoda, Smart, Subaru, Suzuki, Toyota, Volkswagen and Volvo”.

The data is compiled from research centres and OEM professional method sites which are not normally available if you are not an OEM approved auto body repair centre. Systems will be enabled to sign in enquiries for up to 50 vehicles per month, but some OEM sites only allow around 15 documents per hour to be produced, while other motor makers can accommodate up to 60 documents per hour.

The target price for the new service will be rolled out at an attractive rate of R350 plus VAT. The CRA are hoping to build the upliftment technical programme that will become an ideal tool for technicians and vehicle damage estimators as well as insurance assessors.

This approach to body repair will go a long way to remove strip-and-repair foul-ups as these methods are all worked out to the most finite detail of damageability and repairability methods.
