The specialist Classic Racer Museum based in Benoni and owned by Steve Koterba, has only been in existence for some three years but already it boasts an incredible selection of racers for confirmed petrol heads. It has some of South Africa’s most iconic race cars and a collection of memorabilia second-to-none to keep aspiring members up to speed for membership of this exclusive motor racing museum which is strictly by invitation only for events.
“We don’t want a huge number of paid up members,” says Darrel Barlow. The idea of a special concour’s de elegance for our newer members was recently held for both classic motorcycles and period cars. The turnout was strong with over 40 superb entries to be judged which took quite some time to get completed by the diligent judges. Neville Toncher was one of a number of winners with a superb Austin Healey 3000 roadster open top sports car.
Koterba, on the subject of just why this one-man initiative to produce a superb selection of famous road racing cars and bikes, says that it was a hobby that went sort of bonkers and now the end result has become a world class exposition of incredibly complete older age Formula One racing cars, off road racers and classic motorcycles housed under one roof in Benoni.
The Chequered Flag initiative is backed by some amazing enthusiasts from the local area who all want the exposition to remain absolutely top notch in content. That is why they hosted the new members recently with the Best on Show Day for new aspiring collectors and car restorers who make up a big part of the future of the Chequered Flag mission going forwards.
