Afonso Andrade Paes took time out to give Automotive Refinisher a heads up on how the abrasive maker from Portugal is doing in the world of car repair across the globe during his recent visit to South Africa.

Q.

Indasa is a brand in the abrasive market that is renowned for delivering a high quality advanced abrasive range. So what separates you from other abrasive competitive companies on a global basis?

A.

In today’s international market, there are just a handful of companies or competitors left in car body repair. System performance is a vital part of saving time and money for body shops. Another key area of our success remains one of very competitive pricing at distributor level. Indasa are able to control our product output quality with our whole range offer because we manufacture on one production site in Portugal. The company now employs around 350 personnel. Another big part of our success has been the maintenance of high levels of customer service and back-up within the business of our global sales team. In South Africa we have enjoyed great success with Pyrmo SA as our sole distributor in refinish abrasives.

Q.

Tell us a bit about your training focus for your international technicians that back the brand up in collision repair.

A.

The Indasa academy in Apartado goes far beyond a traditional training centre. It features training with new concepts of efficiency learning and development where an invited repair team of technicians undergo a “Train-the-Trainer” course with hands-on training with the full range of products. This is a practised approach to get these professionals to develop their skills to produce faster and without any reject work being seen in the repair cycle. Systems are constantly changing to improve the Indasa performance with aluminium, high strength steel and carbon fibre repair substrates. These require an optimal approach for success for maximum efficiency in these competitive times. That’s why we have racked up good business performances in African markets such as Ghana, Egypt, Turkey, as well as South Africa which is a very important market for export sales. They have shown solid compound growth.

Q.

How does Indasa span the globe business wise in various markets?

A.

Since the company inception back in 1979 we have gone on to achieve the status of being one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of high quality coating abrasives using the most modern technology available at this time. Different market conditions often mean that we need to be able to deliver specific market solutions to areas by seven wholly owned subsidiary companies located in Spain, UK, France, Germany, Brazil and the US. Our international footprint covers over 100 countries worldwide with a network of key distribution companies like we have in South Africa with Pyrmo SA where we work actively to service local demand and promote Indasa business development.

Q.

There is a big focus on occupational safety. How do you cope with that idea?

A.

Dust free products are a key part of our system range with the E-Series tools and the key efficient Rhyno abrasive solutions that we offer. The first 1 500 ultra fine dust free range of discs reduces heat build-up and also shows expanded durability. It helps with polishing in the work place. The dust-free extraction hand blocks and vacuums also make it a safer and cleaner place to operate in with our body shops that maintain high levels of performance.

Q.

How important do you think the South African market is to the Indasa brand?

A.

Indasa has an A to Z answer for all body shop preparation needs and over the years we have developed good and ongoing business dealings in South Africa which has delivered solid growth performance. Indasa is in my opinion capable of delivering a top performance abrasive system that is priced correctly.

Q.

What can we expect to see in the way of new innovative products coming from Indasa?

A.

The Ultravent Rhynogrip advanced dust-free solutions package delivers cleaner and faster sanding than ever before. Indasa has developed this unique and highly advanced dust-free sanding solution with the scope to transform the future of machine sanding. The extraction capacity of the new Ultravent system virtually eliminates abrasive clogging, prolongs performance and provides a clean, healthy working environment.
