KINSEY REPORT 2009
THE KINSEY REPORT 09
The most comprehensive and most relevant report on vehicle parts pricing in South Africa has been published. This year the Kinsey Report covers 44 vehicles and includes a new category, loosely called “Crossover” since the vehicles are neither strictly MPVs nor SUVs, but are more a combination of both. There are both “people” carriers and some “soft’ 4x4s in this section and it is a segment of the market that has grown in size and variety in the past few years. Unfortunately space does not allow for totally comprehensive coverage of all segments of the market, but the 2009 Kinsey Report gives a general overview and shows significant trends in pricing structures. The contents should be helpful in making informed decisions when buying a vehicle. This and previous reports can be found on www.kinsey.valueweb.co.za. A very interesting feature this year is that in all the car categories (excluding the Crossover category), the model winning the overall lowest parts basket cost is also the winner of the selling price to parts basket percentage. This has happened in some categories in the past, but never so overwhelmingly. Only the crossover category, which has a pretty varied collection of vehicles in it, bucks the trend completely.

FRANKFURT SHOW 2009
FRANKFURT 09
Every two years the world’s motor industry converges on Frankfurt for what has to be the biggest and the best motorshow in the world. In order to have a perspective on the show, from one end to the other it is 1,5 kilometres long. That is just in a straight line, so the total amount of walking that gets done is certainly quite formidable.

PRADO ADVENTURE
ALL TERRAIN PRADO ADVENTURE
The all-new range of Prado Land Cruiser models was launched to the press over a three-day intensive drive over deep sand, rock, mountain climbs and miles of dirt roads. So if any of the journalists who attended were in any doubt about the vehicles off-road - on-road credentials, the drive demonstrated capably that there is more onboard luxury, brake power and multi-terrain control than ever.

PRODUCT PROFILE
NEW PRIMA MASKING TAPE
Proper masking techniques are critical to delivering a top-quality, customer-pleasing paint repairs. The masking step in today’s paint repair procedure might be more accurately termed masking-taping because the tape has become every bit as important and varies as much as the masking material. The biggest masking mistake made by many shops is the use of low-quality tapes that don’t adhere properly or are very difficult to remove after baking the car in the booth. A person must consider the importance of dust control, bleeding protection, ease of unmasking, and overall quality of the repair. Somewhere down the list, possibly right behind detailing and just ahead of cleanup, is masking.

BARRY SHEENE MEMORIAL RACE
BARRY SHEENE MEMORIAL RACE
Travelling back in time wasn’t only reserved for the four-wheel racing brigade. Tucked away in the race day’s events was a special Le Mans start of a bike race for machines built in the 1960s which was eagerly anticipated by the record crowds and ravers alike, with many famous motorcycle racers to be seen among the black leather-clad loonies for both legs of the 25-minute race around the picturesque West Sussex track with its fast sweeping curves.

THE ABC OF SPRAYPAINTING
THE ABC OF SPRAYPAINTING
All air tools, spray guns, sanders, etc, must be supplied with air which is elevated to higher pressures and delivered in sufficient volume. The air compressor compresses air for use in this equipment and is a major component of a spray painting system. Compressed air is measured on the basis of volume supplied per unit of time (cubic feet per minute or cfm) at a given pounds per square inch (psi) - referred to as delivery. This is the actual air output of the compressor after its efficiency is taken into account. Displacement is the output of air by a compressor at zero pressure of free air delivery. This is the theoretical air output of the compressor before its efficiency is taken into account.

FUTURE TECH
FUTURE OF AIRBAGS
Activities aimed at maintaining and improving the lifesaving benefits of airbags are in full swing. New sponsored tests use improved “dummy” injury criteria based on new knowledge and research. Until recently, most of the strides made in auto safety were in front and rear impacts, even though 40% of all serious injuries from accidents are the result of side impact, and 30% of all accidents are side-impact collisions.

SAMBRA NEWS
DEMERITS OF A PANEL SYSTEM
Following the current impasse created in the MBR industry by the ABSA Procurement selection process of a closed panel of repairers SAMBRA has engaged in talks with ABSA Insurance Procurement department which eventually reached a stale-mate. A procurement system used by any institution should be fair, competitive and transparent. In the current economic climate we face major challenges, as an industry body of stimulating economic growth by economically empowering SMME’s and previously marginalised sectors of society. We believe the exclusionary effects of a preferred panel system negates the consumers right to choice as well as the concept of a free market system, therefore marginalising the role of current MBR’s in the broader scope of today’s economy.
