In a way you have to hand it to the Fiat car company for offering such a unique car for sale as the 500 0.9 TwinAir Pop auto. Its heritage is clearly visible with a refreshed exterior. It’s been upgraded with a host of onboard technology but hasn’t grown in size.

The TwinAir Pop auto model makes a sure case for everyday fun transportation. Fuel consumption is 3.8 litres/100 km on the combined cycle with emissions lower than 90 g/km of CO2. This is a remarkable result in terms of eco-sustainability, which the Fiat 500 brand is dedicated to.

Like the original model, Fiat’s success with  the concept has already reeled in some 1.5 million car sales in their concept of what small mobility should look like.

A painted dashboard layout quickly states “I’m Italian”. There is a 7-inch TFT display that was developed in collaboration with Magneti Marelli, the international leader in the design and manufacturing of high-tech automotive systems and components. This is all perfectly integrated with the Uconnect™ 5” Radio LIVE and Uconnect™ 5” Radio Nav LIVE so that the media player, telephone and navigator can share the same screen.

There are new chrome-plated accents throughout the interior which give it a bit more personality and funk. There is a choice of nine colour combinations for the upholstery so it’s all about putting your own personal stamp on your car, and as always, your budget. Like a tailor-made garment, everyone can express their own personality now with a unique, distinctive style with the ‘Second Skin’ collection of the New 500.

There’s a geometric, trendy ethnic pattern along the belt line in the “Small” solution, while the ‘Medium’ solution includes pillars and roof – and in some cases also the bonnet and tailgate – with four patterns: ‘Lord’ (classic tartan), ‘Comics’ (pop decoration) in combination with the new two-colour body paintwork, ‘Navy’ (fresh and breezy) and ‘Camouflage’ (fashionably military).

The New 500 is also fitted as standard with seven airbags (two front, two window bags, two side bags and one for knee protection) as standard equipment. The new model also employs the most sophisticated technical solutions to ensure that the driver is in perfect control of the car (active safety): ABS with electronic brake distribution (EBD), advanced electronic stability control (ESC), anti-slip regulation (ASR) system, the Hill Holder devices – which help the driver with hill starts – and hydraulic brake assistance (HBA) to help with emergency stops.

The Fiat 500 has a brilliant drive but the DSG five-speed type automatic gearbox, on some occasions, can deliver a sort of ‘lag’ in acceleration. Its ‘yaw’ takes a bit of getting used to. That said, Fiat’s attention to detail makes this small car a great place to be and enjoy.

The Fiat 500 0.9 TwinAir Pop auto comes with a three-year/100 000km warranty and is priced at R190 900.
